The Malaria Parasite (MP) Smear test is a microscopic examination of a blood sample to detect the presence of malaria parasites. It is one of the most reliable and commonly used diagnostic tools for confirming a malaria infection, especially in regions where the disease is prevalent.
It detects malaria antigens in the blood, helping to quickly diagnose malaria infections, particularly those caused by Plasmodium falciparum.
It is used for rapid screening of malaria in symptomatic patients, especially when timely diagnosis is crucial or microscopy is unavailable.
No fasting is required for this test.
Results are typically available within 12 hours, often much sooner—usually within 15–30 minutes after sample collection.
Minimal risks. You may experience a brief prick from the needle or lancet, and possibly minor bruising.
A positive result indicates the presence of malaria antigens and suggests an active infection. Further testing may be done to confirm the species and start treatment.
